Instructions
Step 1: Melt butter in a saucepan and whisk in flour to create a roux.
Step 2: Gradually whisk in milk, cooking until thickened.
Step 3: Add salt, pepper, nutmeg, and Gruyère cheese; stir until smooth.
Step 4: Stir in mustard for added flavor (transcript variation).
Step 5: Butter both sides of the bread and toast in a pan until golden.
Step 6: Add cheese and ham, then transfer to oven to melt and heat through.
Step 7: Top with Mornay sauce and return to oven until bubbly and golden.
